News?

Just a couple of opinion articles that I found interesting. You may have read them, I don't know. You may agree or not but they make you think.

I haven't read the Live 8 article, but I would like to point out that Orson Scott Card bugs the crap out of me. His political rhetoric is so full of bile that any credible points he may make (and I don't think he has a lot of them) get lost behind his own swollen head and sense of self-righteousness. I think it's people like him as much as anyone who give Mormons the public face of crazy ultra-conservative Christians--when I for one don't think that's what we are. That article just bugged me more and more the more I read. Then again, I'm apparently in "Smartland" not "Heartland" because I think Bush is an idiot who has caused many more problems then he solved. Obviously, though, I hate America, so you know.

I feel the same way about Card. He comes off as an arrogant fool more often than not.

"People who are so sure they're right that they are willing to eliminate democratic processes in order to get and keep power are the enemies of freedom for everyone. We may be slow to recognize the danger, but one thing is certain: Once the Puritans have power, everyone else will finally see the cost of their utopia."

When I read this, I thought in my mind how that applies just as easily, if not easier, to the corporate scandals and greed so closely tied to conservative republicans. I'm not saying that Card isn't right about the problems the American media faces--there is some truth to that, but he clearly has an accusatory tone, where there are people to blame on both sides of the fence.

I got distracted and found this , a column on the Cold Case episode. I agree completely with Chris Hicks...not with Card. The voice of LDS people should be heard regarding an offence such as this. We shouldn't just ignore and 'fly under the radar'. Though that was obviously necessary in the early years of the church, the LDS church is at a stage now where we can, and need to take a stand for our beliefs. We don't hate gays. We don't receive instructive messages from God to commit crimes. We're not as wierd as CBS makes us look.

Anyway, the Live 8 article was interesting too. I know little about the situation, but it sounds like Greenpeace has the wrong idea about how to help. Of course, if Hollywood and Pop Music support Greenpeace and it's goals, then they must be right....lol.

Ignore spelling and grammar please. I should be asleep.

I didn't mean that in the early days we shouldn't "take a stand", but it's just easier to publicly stand for what we do today, than I imagine it was in Missouri or Illinois in the mid 1800s. You know what I'm sayin'.

Here's another interesting take on Live 8 and all that jazz. This comes from the editor of a very liberal online magazine, Slate.com. Interesting stuff: http://www.slate.com/id/2121685/

Interesting article, Joel. I've read Slate on and off for a while...have you ever read the "Ad Report Cards?" They're the best! Of course, there's no politics in those articles...

Yes, I love ad report cards. That was what first got me hooked. I also like their reviews and stuff. I don't read as many of the political articles--not because their slant bothers me, just because politics bore me. But I think most of the writers they have are pretty good.

Yeah, it's one of the more well-assembled "e-zines" or what have you.

And I get much less annoyed with things I read on there than I do with, for example, something I see on Fox News.

Yep.

Apparently you and I are the only ones having this conversation.

Yeah, well I figure we may as well put this web space to use for SOMETHING!

HINT TO JOHNNY! (post more)
